Volunteering is fun, big time.
Being a Big Brother or Big Sister is one of the most enjoyable things you’ll ever do. Not to mention, one of the most fulfilling. You have the opportunity to help shape a child’s future for the better by empowering them to achieve. And the best part is, it’s actually a lot of fun. You and your Little can share the kinds of activities you already like to do.
Play sports together. Go on a hike. Read books. Eat a pizza with extra anchovies. Or just give some advice and inspiration. Whatever it is you enjoy, odds are you’ll enjoy them even more with your Little—and you’ll be making a life-changing impact.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City offers two basic programs.
Community Based Program:
The community based program is the traditional Big Brothers Big Sisters program that matches children ages 8-14 from one-parent or non-traditional households with caring, adult mentors.
- Children simply want and an extra person in their lives.
- Independent research shows kids who are matched with "Bigs" are more likely to succeed in life.
- Commitment is a few hours a week.
- There are kids from all over the Greater Kansas City area.
Kauffman Scholars Mentor Program:
This program matches high school students enrolled in the Kauffman Scholars program with an adult mentor. The Kauffman Scholars program is a college preparatory program that offers kids who complete a rigorous six year program, a full ride scholarship to the school of their choice.
- Most Scholars are first generation college students and need help with the process of choosing a college and career path.
- Scholars range from Freshman-Seniors in high school.
- Commitment is once a month.
- All Scholars live in the Kansas City, MO or Kansas City, KS school districts.
