Be a Big

By just spending a little time with a child who wants and needs a mentor you can change a life of a child forever.

Volunteering is fun, big time.

Being a Big Brother or Big Sister is one of the most enjoyable things you’ll ever do. Not to mention, one of the most fulfilling. You have the opportunity to help shape a child’s future for the better by empowering them to achieve. And the best part is, it’s actually a lot of fun. You and your Little can share the kinds of activities you already like to do.

Play sports together. Go on a hike. Read books. Eat a pizza with extra anchovies. Or just give some advice and inspiration. Whatever it is you enjoy, odds are you’ll enjoy it even more with your Little—and you’ll be making a life-changing impact.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City offers two basic programs.

Community Based Program:
The community based program is the traditional Big Brothers Big Sisters program that matches children ages 8-14 from one-parent or non-traditional households with caring, adult mentors.

  • Children simply want and need an extra person in their lives.
  • Independent research shows kids who are matched with "Bigs" are more likely to succeed in life.
  • Commitment is a few hours a week.
  • There are kids from all over the Greater Kansas City area.

ACES Mentor Program:

This initiative seeks to support children facing adversity not only through high school but through post secondary education as well. This program provides the guidance and resources necessary to help students become successful. BBBS-KC provides every ACES participant with a much-needed mentor. The ACES Program is a bit different than the traditional program. Bigs & Littles meet twice a month and work to build a friendship that includes talking about post-secondary education.

You should consider volunteering for this initiative if any of these apply:

  • You have a few hours twice a month to share with a student in the 8th grade and up.
  • You would like to support and offer encouragement to a young adult.
