Micheal Lawrence
Chief Executive Officer
Micheal Lawrence began his career at Big Brothers Big Sisters in 1992. He started out as a Case Manager for the program in which he spent his time working directly with the volunteers and children in the program, focusing on making successful matches that made a difference. Prior to coming to Big Brothers Big Sisters Lawrence had worked with runaway children and was disappointed with the outcomes that came along with working with these children. He found Big Brothers Big Sisters as an opportunity to make an impact on the children before they reached this point in their lives.
After five years as a Case Manager, Lawrence moved into managing the special events for the agency. He excelled at his positions handling multiple special events including Summer Bowl for Kids Sake which grew from $180,000 to $450,000 pledged, spearheading the Legacy Invitational golf tournament which has quickly become the best client entertainment golf event in town and organizing the annual sports and entertainment auction that went from raising $30,000 to $120,000. In addition from 1999-2004, Lawrence served as the Program Director in which he implemented new program management systems and created a computer-based volunteer enrollment system that reduced volunteer processing time from 91 to 27 days. In 2002, it was clear that Lawrence was an emerging leader. The position of Associate Executive Director was created to prepare him for the Executive Director position.
Lawrence became the Executive Director in 2007. During his time as Executive Director, he has led the agency to become the fastest growing mid-size Big Brothers Big Sisters agency in the country and the third fastest growing agency overall. He has worked to develop partnerships with other local youth serving organizations such as Kauffman Scholars and Boys and Girls Clubs. Under his leadership, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City has improved their financial health, while serving 25% more children. Lawrence led a Board of Directors transformation that includes a fundraising and strategic planning focus and a 100% giving commitment.
Lawrence graduated from William Jewell College with a Bachelors degree in Psychology. He was on the founding board of Harris Youth Foundation, is a United Way Key Accounts Ambassador and is a Big Brother in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program himself. He has been married to his wife Tina for 14 years and has two sons, Tyler and Blake, both of whom played Division 1 football.
