The Business of Changing Lives

Our agency is often described as a non-profit that functions like a business.  We take that as a compliment.  Our mission is all about creating and supporting life-changing friendships for children, but we know that we can help more children and create a greater impact when we are focused and efficient.  This approach has led our agency to be recognized as the fastest growing BBBS agency in the country, while also receiving numerous local and national awards for high impact and quality.

One example of our business-like approach centers around our focus on the execution of key strategies.  We have created and carried out traditional three-year strategic plans in the past.  Those plans have helped us set priorities and make important decisions.  In the fall of 2015, however, the BBBSKC staff embarked on a new process for effectively carrying out our mission.  Rather than completing a traditional three-year strategic plan, it was determined that the agency would most benefit from developing really strong strategies for executing, with great focus, on our most important initiatives.  We felt that we already had a clear mission and vision for the agency, and we have a strong base of employees and leaders.  After consulting with thought leaders on the topic of strategy, our instincts were confirmed.  With “execution” as our top priority, we researched the subject and became familiar with Franklin Covey’s Four Disciplines of Execution (4DX) program.   Through a local contact and a series of conversations, we convinced the Execution Practice Leader for Franklin Covey to spend a day with our leadership team, sharing the concepts of 4DX.  Without the funds to fully commit to hiring consultants, we adopted the key principles and developed our own model.

The Franklin Covey Four Disciplines of Execution:

Discipline 1: Focus on the Wildly Important

Discipline 2: Act on the Lead Measures

Discipline 3: Keep a Compelling Scoreboard

Discipline 4: Create a Cadence of Accountability


The BBBSKC Execution model embodies all of the Franklin Covey principals but with our own twist.  The BBBSKC model does not translate well to paper, but it can be seen “living” throughout every department, every day within our agency.   Department goals and strategies are clearly defined and are captured on scoreboards that were created by each department.   A walk through our building will tell you everything you need to know about what is important and what will lead to high achievement. You will encounter at department meetings with staff gathered around a scoreboard sharing ideas for how to accomplish a strategy or to reporting on honoring a commitment from the previous week.  You will know at a glance that we are committed to achievement.

We successfully installed all four disciplines into our agency in 2016 and experienced the best year in our agency’s history – recruiting more Bigs, making more matches, and raising more money than any year prior.

With the talent we have assembled and the sound practices we use to execute on strategies, I am confident that our team could successfully run a company, sell a product, or deliver any service successfully…fortunately for the children and families we serve, our team is dedicated to Big Brothers Big Sisters and changing lives through the power of one-to-one mentoring.
