Graduation Celebration

Graduations are momentous occasions that call for a time of celebration. These milestone moments signify the end of an era and dawn of a new beginning. Traditionally, the month of May is one of the most popular months for graduations to be held. It is during this time of year that many gather to acknowledge the accomplishments of loved ones and friends. Ironically, May also symbolizes the forthcoming shift from spring to the summer season.

Recently, I had the honor of attending the high school graduation of my Little Brianna. Emotions ran high as hundreds of friends, family and faculty members filled the seats of the auditorium in support of the 2017 graduates of Winnetonka High School. I could hardly contain my excitement as I watched each student approach the stage. Each graduate exemplified the strength, determination, and perseverance that it takes to become the recipient of a high school diploma. With great anticipation, I awaited Brianna’s advancement to the stage. As the announcer called her name, I stood from my chair shouting and exclaiming with tears of joy as she received her diploma. As a mentor who has also become a friend, it was a privilege to partake in that commemorative moment.

For many reasons, I am proud of Brianna with her graduation from high school being at the top of the list. For the past few months, I have watched her diligently set and attain academic and personal goals. One goal, in particular, being the successful transition from high school to college. Brianna plans to attend Tennessee State University in the Fall of 2017. I look forward to walking alongside her as she pursues the path of post-secondary success. Brianna and I have become life-long friends.

Along with Brianna, Big Brothers Big Sisters is excited to honor our 2017 high school and college graduates on June 17th at a celebratory rooftop event.  We also look forward to continuing to support 525 current ACES Matches and nearly 100 incoming 8th graders that will join the program this summer. Our team works passionately with each match to make ensure that the students, parents, and mentors have all of the resources needed to set and reach their personal, scholastic and professional goals.

Big Brothers Big Sisters operates the ACES program with the knowledge that all of these vital components greatly increase a student’s feelings of support, empowerment, and belief that they can achieve any goal and find their place in the world. Our commitment is to equip our students to thrive and succeed as the leaders of tomorrow. Congratulations to the class of 2017 and all of the future graduates to come!
