Meet Girl on the Rise: Airrial

Name: Airrial

Age: 17

School: Lincoln College Preparatory Academy

Dream College(s): Any school where I can double major in ESL and Chinese.

Future Plans: Teach English as a second language in other countries

Do you know what you’d like to major in or have a career in?  If so, what is it?

I plan to double major in ESL and Chinese, so I can teach English as a second language in other countries.

How has your Big helped you get where you are?

My Big Sister Mandy has not limited me to anything. Everything that I've wanted to try she's never "shot it down" so to speak.  She is one of the reasons I am as open-minded as I am now. She also helped me to open myself up to the world and to not be so shy.

What is something you are most proud of?

I am most proud of the grades that I've gotten so far in my high school career. My goal is to graduate with all A' s and with a rank in the top 20 of my graduating class.

Have you gone through any tough or challenging times and how did you deal with those times?

When I was younger I was bullied a lot because of my ethnicity. I didn't have a way to deal with it until I met Mandy, who got me out and showed me that the world is way bigger than just my school. There was so much more out there and a lot of the people who picked on me I would never meet again.

What does it mean to you to be selected as a Girl on the Rise?

I'm so honored to be selected as a Girl on the Rise. I was worried that the only way for me to choose a school would be online. It will inspire me to go out into the college world and explore my options. Now I will be able to visit colleges and decide what my future will look like. I want to be assured face to face that THIS is the college I'm looking for, and Girls on the Rise provides that.

What schools will you use the funding to visit, and why?

I've been looking at colleges such as Georgetown, Penn State, etc. I'm willing to attend any college as long as they have an ESL major and Chinese major.

After a thorough application process, 10 motivated, smart and talented young women from the BBBS program have been selected to be our 2017 Girls on the Rise.

Although they meet the qualifications to attend some of the best schools in the country, many would not be able to visit their dream schools.  Because we believe the possibilities are endless for these girls, we are helping make the college visits of their dreams come true.
