Name: Kristin Carty
School: Liberty North High School
Dream College(s): Arizona State University
Future Plans: After I graduate high school I plan on going to Maple Woods Community College. After those two years, I plan on expanding to an out of state college.
Do you know what you’d like to major in or have a career in? If so, what is it?
My main goal is to become a high school counselor or social worker for a high school and ideally, I would love to major in psychology or sociology.
How has your Big helped you get where you are?
I've been with my Big since I was 7 years old and I've grown up knowing that she's always there for me. She's family.
What is one thing your Big has taught you?
She's taught me to be strong- mentally and physically.
What is something you are most proud of?
My sophomore year of high school, the first time I ever competed in anything, I went the district competition for choir and received a 1. 1 is considered the best, which meant I would progress to state competition. I went to the University of Missouri for state and received a 2.
Have you gone through any tough or challenging times and how did you deal with those times?
I've realized no matter how sad or frustrated you are, the best medicine is laughter and a great night with your closest friends.
What does it mean to you to be selected as a Girl on the Rise?
This is an extraordinary opportunity and I'm very excited to see how this experience will help me further my life.
What inspired you to want to be involved with Girls on the Rise?
It's an excellent program. It makes us feel special and gives us the opportunities that we deserve, but might never get to experience.
How will funding from the 1,000 Dreams Fund/Big Brothers Big Sisters help you reach your goals? In other words: Why is the opportunity to visit your prospective colleges important to your journey?
I want to make sure whatever college I go to is going to be a college that will offer me the best options my future and make sure that school is right for me, without a doubt. These colleges visits will help me figure that out.
What schools will you use the funding to visit, and why?
Arizona State University has always been my dream school. New York University has a great psychology and sociology program.
After a thorough application process, 10 motivated, smart and talented young women from the BBBS program have been selected to be our 2017 Girls on the Rise.
Although they meet the qualifications to attend some of the best schools in the country, many would not be able to visit their dream schools. Because we believe the possibilities are endless for these girls, we are helping make the college visits of their dreams come true.
