Meet Girl on the Rise: Shelby

Name: Shelby

Age: 16

School: Wyandotte High School

Dream College(s): Colorado State, Washington State

Future Plans:  I want to finish high school and college and become an interior designer, working for a company and then eventually owning my own interior design business.

Do you know what you’d like to major in or have a career in?  If so, what is it?

I want to be an interior designer.

How has your Big helped you get where you are?

My Big Sister is really the best. She got me an interview with an interior designer, which was so helpful. She always asks how I'm doing with school and life in general. She has gone above and beyond to make sure my dreams are met.

What is one thing your Big has taught you?

She showed me how important school really is.

What is something you are most proud of?

Something I am most proud of is already knowing what I want to do in life and I'm  determined to reach my goals.

Have you gone through any tough or challenging times and how did you deal with those times?

I have been through many tough situations, but I know it’s in the past and it always gets better.

What does it mean to you to be selected as a Girl on the Rise?

It means the world to me. I wouldn't be able to visit the colleges I want to go to out-of-state if it wasn't for Girls on the Rise.

What inspired you to want to be involved with Girls on the Rise?

My Big Sister inspired me to be a Girl on the Rise. She told me about this opportunity and help me sign up.

How will funding from the 1,000 Dreams Fund/Big Brothers Big Sisters help you reach your goals?  In other words: Why is the opportunity to visit your prospective colleges important to your journey?

Once I visit the colleges I am looking at, I'll get a feel of the place and be able to decide what is best for me.

What schools will you use the funding to visit, and why?

Colorado State, because they have an interior designer program I want to check out.  And Washington State, because I want to see what they have to offer me that will benefit my future.

After a thorough application process, 10 motivated, smart and talented young women from the BBBS program have been selected to be our 2017 Girls on the Rise.

Although they meet the qualifications to attend some of the best schools in the country, many would not be able to visit their dream schools.  Because we believe the possibilities are endless for these girls, we are helping make the college visits of their dreams come true.
