We Want You to Join Volunteer Corps!

We sat down with Special Events Manager, Brittany Davis, to chat about the Volunteer Corps at Big Brothers Big Sisters to learn more about the group and ways people can get involved.

What is Volunteer Corps?

BD: Volunteer Corps is a group of consistent special event volunteers the agency can reach out to and rely on to volunteer at several events throughout the year.

There are several event volunteer opportunities at Big Brothers Big Sisters and sometimes figuring out the right fit can be a little overwhelming. If you are new to Volunteer Corps, you can learn about all the different events BBBSKC holds and where volunteers are needed throughout those events. You can volunteer at the events you are most excited about and have an idea of what tasks you can help with in the future. The best thing about Volunteer Corps is you can pick and choose which events you would like to help out with and have the most fun at, which is especially awesome at sold out or exclusive events.

Who can join Volunteer Corps?

BD: We have a way for individual volunteers to get involved, as well as a way for companies to get involved. For individuals to join, we look for adults who are at least 18 years old and are willing to volunteer at about four events a year. These people can be brand new to BBBS or can be long-time supporters or Bigs. If you want to help at events, you qualify for Volunteer Corps!

For corporate volunteers, we are looking for company coordinators or HR reps who have the capability of posting volunteer opportunities on their company website/intranet or who can send out office-wide email blasts about volunteer needs. These people are willing to advocate for BBBS and help recruit employee volunteers.

Why should I volunteer or get my company involved with volunteering at BBBS events?

BD: First off, it feels good to give back! I’d also say that our event volunteer opportunities are fun and an easy way to support the agency. We have a wide variety of events, so I’m positive we would find the right opportunities for each person wanting to get involved.

Workplace volunteerism is also important and can make a huge impact. Several studies show that employees who work at a company that encourages volunteering believe their company has a strong corporate culture and it motivates them to get behind a cause.

In fact, according to Deloitte’s 2016 Impact Survey, “Millennials who frequently participate in workplace volunteer activities are more likely to be proud, loyal and satisfied employees, as compared to those who rarely or never volunteer.”

This is what I like to call a win-win. We find more eager event volunteers to help support BBBS and at the same time, companies see more engaged and satisfied employees.

Why is Volunteer Corps so important?

BD: It all comes back to the volunteers! Without the help of consistent event volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to put on successful fundraising events. And without successful fundraising events, we wouldn’t be able to create and support all of the matches in our program. Often times, volunteers are the face of our events. They greet and interact with guests, provide customer service and can leave lasting impressions on event attendees and potential donors.  Having the right group of volunteers can be a game changer for the agency!

What is the Next Event Volunteer Opportunity?

BD: We are currently gearing up for our two Legacy Golf Tournaments being held on May 22 and June 5 at The National. We are currently looking for volunteer golf caddies to assist our golfers throughout the day. This is a great networking opportunity and a fun day out on the golf course!

What are some other events Volunteer Corps helps with?

Summer Bowl Prize Patrol- These volunteers monitor the bowling lanes and hand out prizes to participants who knock over the glowing pin and celebrate their victory. This is a great volunteer opportunity for all ages, especially Big and Little volunteers.

Races- BBBSKC is the beneficiary of several third party races throughout the year. We always need volunteers at these events to help with packet pickup and race monitoring. Volunteers usually receive free swag at these events. If you’re not a runner, but want to help give back this is the job for you.
