Resources for Social Distancing in Kansas City

In this time of social distancing, it's more important than ever to stay connected. While we might not be meeting together in physical spaces right now, we can still meet and connect online everyday!

In addition to FaceTime, Skype, Zoom, etc., we wanted to offer a few ideas for fun and free/low-cost ways for Bigs and Littles to stay in touch while practicing social distancing, as well as resources to help Littles and families pass the time, too. Feel free to bookmark this page and use it as a resource!

Bigs & Littles: Ways to Stay Connected

  • Start an on online game through the Game Pigeon app! There are several games to choose from, and you can chat back and forth while you play.

  • Download Netflix Party for Chrome! Netflix Party synchronizes video playback and lets you chat while you watch your favorite shows and movies together.

  • Tabletopia.com is a great option for playing board games remotely.

  • Hop on FaceTime and take turns playing Heads Up!

  • Take advantage of the Digital Branch of the Kansas City Public Library to do a "book club" or story time together! It offers a vast collection that can be read in a web browser, downloaded to a mobile device, or streamed online, all for free!

  • Does your match love music? Share your Spotify playlists with one another, or make a specific playlist just for your Big/Little!

  • If the Big and Little both have a video game system, this is also a great time to get online and play together!

  • Finally, you can always go old-school — write letters back and forth to each other! If your match is artsy, send drawings back and forth for each other to keep.

Littles & Families: Tips and Resources/Things to Do

  • Parents, making a consistent daily schedule will go a long way to keep things running smoothly! Make a schedule similar to what a school day would look like, then stick to it.

  • Parents, when working with your kids through on-line learning, shoot for 20-minute blocks of time: 20 minutes of work, then a break, repeat.

  • Parents & Littles can also try taking mindfulness breaks together! Cosmic Kids Yoga has short yoga sessions based off favorite children's stories, books. and movies.

  • Participate in "Chalk your Walk" together! Pick a day (not a rainy one!) and draw a picture and write a positive message with chalk on your sidewalk — then send us a picture! Parents & Littles can also get some exercise by taking a walk in the neighborhood to find other drawings, too.

  • Spectrum is offering free WiFi access to homes that do not currently have an internet connection — call 844-488-8398 for more information.

  • The Kansas City Zoo is offering daily livestreams of feedings and educational pieces on their Facebook page!

  • Several museums are offering free virtual tours — check out a list of them here!

  • Younger Littles will enjoy daily "Lunchtime Doodles" with popular children's author Mo Willems! This is a great way to help occupy Littles' time, or matches can FaceTime and do these together!

  • Go Noodle is a great resource that offers fun videos to get kids up and moving. It's a great way to burn energy while staying inside!

  • Local puppet theater Mesner Puppet Theater is uploading videos to their YouTube channel with activities and crafts for kids. It's a great resource for Littles that need a creative outlet!
