Why mentoring is the BEST investment you can make!

So it sounds too simple to be effective, right? Everyone has mentors throughout their life but are they really life-changing? Well think of someone in your life that has helped steer you in the right path. This could be your parents who encouraged you to follow your dreams or someone that you looked up to who shaped what career field you decided to peruse.

BBBSKC's ACES program helps prepare Littles for college and career success

Big Brothers Big Sisters understands that mentorship is key in supporting the future success of our youth. A mentor can have a tremendous impact in supporting the post-secondary journey. As a community, we have a responsibility to ensure that our students are life ready which encompasses college and career readiness. Although college may not be the best fit for everyone, students should be encouraged to become college and career ready because it also prepares them for the workforce.

Reflections from a Case Manager

It takes me back to the time I sat at my desk with the exciting and so important task of finding the “just right” child for a volunteer to mentor. It takes me back to a mother’s excited reaction when I get to tell her that I’ve found a Big Brother or Big Sister for her child. It takes me back to pulling my car up to a child’s home to find that child waiting at the door or peeking out of the front window on the day of their match meeting.

Girls on the Rise

College visits are an important step in the college search process, according to Christie Garton, founder of the 1,000 Dreams Fund. The chance to get a sense of the campus culture helps ensures that students end up at a place where they will thrive rather than wanting to drop out or transfer. However, at an average cost of $1,000-3,000 to visit schools, college visits can be cost prohibitive for many students.
